James Calam

James Calam has been Professional at our Club since May 2014.  An acknowledged coach, James comes from a family long associated with the game in North England. His uncle was Head Pro at Filey for 41 years; his grandfather was Head Greenkeeper at Ganton and his uncle held a similar role at Brough. His own career included Head Pro at Allerthorpe Park near York; Assistant Pro at Ganton for eight years (once the home course of Harry Vardon) as well as lengthy teaching spells in Austria and Italy. His teaching career also involved assisting his colleague, Tour regular Simon Dyson.  He was there when Dyson won the Dunhill. James held two course records during his playing career; one of which at Flamborough Head has not been bettered.

The professional you most admire and why: Nick Faldo who risked everything by changing his swing technique after winning the PGA at Ganton in 1981 (James' home course)

The courses you enjoy most: Ganton which delivers the toughest of finishes and The Nairn Golf Club for good memories

The current professionals you most admire: Simon Dyson, my good friend who allowed me to coach him

Best golf tip: Chin up, left eye looking at the back of the ball (apologies to lefties!)
